Analysis of the match between Ghana and Panama
Ghana head into the 2026 World Cup with high expectations after an impressive African qualifying campaign. The West African side topped their group with an outstanding record of eight wins, one draw, and only one defeat, securing direct qualification to the biggest football tournament on the planet. Such consistency once again highlighted Ghana's status as one of Africa's most formidable football nations.
However, shortly after securing their World Cup berth, Ghana underwent a coaching change as Otto Addo departed from his role. The Ghana Football Association subsequently appointed the experienced Carlos Queiroz, hoping the Portuguese tactician can guide the team to a deep run in North America. Queiroz is no stranger to the World Cup stage, having managed Iran at the 2014, 2018, and 2022 editions, while also leading Portugal to the Round of 16 in 2010.
Despite those ambitions, Ghana's preparation for the tournament has not been entirely convincing. They suffered a defeat against Mexico and were held to a draw by Wales in recent friendlies. Those results suggest that Queiroz still has work to do in helping his players adapt to his tactical philosophy and regain confidence ahead of their opening match.
On the other hand, Panama have enjoyed a relatively encouraging buildup. After a heavy loss to Brazil, the CONCACAF representatives bounced back with a victory over the Dominican Republic and a respectable draw against Bosnia. Those performances indicate that Panama are arriving at the tournament in stable form and ready to challenge any opponent.
In terms of squad quality, Ghana are still considered superior thanks to a number of players competing in Europe's top leagues. Antoine Semenyo is expected to be their main attacking threat, bringing pace, power, and creativity in the final third. Nevertheless, turning that potential into consistent performances remains a challenge that Carlos Queiroz must address.
Against a disciplined, energetic Panama side that is willing to press aggressively, Ghana could face a difficult test. Unless they improve their ability to break down compact defensive structures, the African representatives may risk dropping points in their opening game.
